Profile
Public Defense for the Community
The Pima County Legal Defender is a vital component of the criminal justice system in Southern Arizona. As a government agency, its mission is to provide high-quality legal representation to indigent individuals who are accused of crimes but cannot afford private counsel. Located in downtown Tucson in the historic Legal Services Building, this office ensures that the constitutional right to counsel is upheld for everyone, regardless of their financial status. They are appointed by the court system to handle cases when the primary Public Defender’s office has a conflict of interest or reaches caseload limits.
Court-Appointed Representation
Unlike private law firms, you cannot directly hire the Legal Defender. Instead, they are assigned by the court to represent clients in specific types of cases:
- Felony Defense: Defending individuals charged with serious crimes in Pima County Superior Court.
- Appeals: Handling direct appeals for those convicted of crimes who wish to challenge the verdict.
- Post-Conviction Relief: Assisting with Rule 32 petitions and other legal avenues after a conviction.
- Extradition Hearings: Representing individuals facing transfer to other jurisdictions.
Dedication to Justice
The attorneys at the Legal Defender’s office are experienced public servants dedicated to the principle of Equal Justice Under Law. They work with a team of investigators, paralegals, and social workers to build robust defenses for their clients. While this is a government office and not a private firm, their attorneys possess deep knowledge of the local court system, judges, and prosecutors. If you have been appointed a lawyer from this office, you can rest assured that you have a qualified legal professional fighting for your rights.
