Profile
Vital Legal Defense for Death Row
The Georgia Resource Center is a specialized non-profit law office located in Downtown Atlanta, dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation to individuals on Georgia’s death row. Established in 1988, the center plays a critical role in the state’s justice system by handling habeas corpus proceedings and clemency hearings for indigent prisoners facing capital punishment. Without this organization, many individuals under death sentences would lack the necessary counsel to navigate complex post-conviction appeals. The center’s mission is grounded in the belief that every person, regardless of their crime or financial status, deserves a vigorous defense and the full protection of the law.
Specialized Appellate Advocacy
The center focuses exclusively on post-conviction relief in capital cases. If you need to find a lawyer or organization that understands the intricacies of the death penalty appeals process, the Georgia Resource Center is the primary authority in the state.
- Habeas Corpus: representing death-sentenced prisoners in state and federal courts to challenge the constitutionality of their convictions and sentences.
- Clemency Proceedings: Advocating before the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to commute death sentences to life imprisonment.
- Post-Conviction Relief: Investigating claims of innocence, prosecutorial misconduct, and ineffective assistance of counsel.
- Mental Health Advocacy: raising issues related to intellectual disability and mental illness in capital cases.
Non-Profit Legal Services
As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Georgia Resource Center provides its services free of charge to its clients, who are among the most vulnerable in the prison system. The staff consists of dedicated attorneys, investigators, and paralegals who work tirelessly to ensure that the death penalty is not administered unfairly or unconstitutionally. Located in the historic State Bar of Georgia Building on Marietta Street, the center acts as a safeguard against wrongful executions and systemic injustice.
