Profile
Guardians of the Sixth Amendment in Idaho
Federal Defenders of Idaho stands as a pillar of justice in the federal court system, ensuring that the right to counsel is a reality for everyone, regardless of their financial means. Established to uphold the Sixth Amendment, this Community Defender Organization provides high-quality legal representation to individuals charged with federal crimes who cannot afford a private attorney. The organization operates on the belief that fair trials are the bedrock of a free society and that every person deserves a zealous defense against the power of the federal government.
Specialized Federal Criminal Defense
Unlike general practice firms, Federal Defenders of Idaho focuses exclusively on federal criminal defense. This specialization allows their attorneys to master the complex and unique rules of federal procedure and sentencing guidelines. The legal team handles a broad spectrum of cases, including:
- White Collar Crimes: Defending against allegations of fraud, embezzlement, and cybercrimes with a deep understanding of financial regulations.
- Drug Offenses: Representing clients in complex conspiracy and trafficking cases, often involving challenge to wiretap evidence and search warrants.
- Firearms Charges: Navigating the intricate statutes regarding weapon possession and modification.
- Capital Habeas Unit: A specialized team dedicated to representing death row inmates in post-conviction proceedings, fighting for their lives and constitutional rights.
A Team of Dedicated Advocates
The attorneys at Federal Defenders of Idaho are not just lawyers; they are passionate advocates for human dignity. Led by Executive Director Nicole Owens, the staff includes seasoned trial lawyers, appellate specialists, investigators, and paralegals working in unison. They approach each case with compassion, recognizing the human story behind every docket number. Their work extends beyond the courtroom, as they often assist clients in navigating the social and personal challenges that accompany legal proceedings.
Commitment to Justice
As a non-profit organization funded by the Criminal Justice Act, Federal Defenders of Idaho plays a critical role in the adversarial system. They provide a check on prosecutorial power and ensure that the courts function fairly. If you or a loved one has been appointed counsel from this office, you can rest assured that you are represented by some of the most skilled and dedicated defense attorneys in the state. The organization also serves as a resource for the private bar, providing training and mentorship to panel attorneys who take appointed cases.
Located in the heart of downtown Boise, the office is situated in the Idaho Building, just blocks from the federal courthouse. This proximity allows for immediate responsiveness to court hearings and client needs. While you cannot simply hire an attorney from this office directly as you would a private firm, their appointment by the court guarantees top-tier legal defense for those in need.
We pursue compassion and humanity in our courts – arguing for truly parsimonious sentencing in the face of brutal federal prison conditions. We honor our clients’ inherent dignity and character.
