Empowering Communities Through Free Civil Legal Aid in Evansville, Indiana
Access to justice should not depend on how much money you have. Yet, for many low-income families and individuals, legal challenges can threaten their most basic needs, including housing, safety, and financial stability. Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a non-profit law firm dedicated to bridging this gap. Our Evansville office provides free civil legal assistance to eligible residents in Southwestern Indiana, helping them navigate complex legal matters during some of the most difficult times in their lives. If you need to find a lawyer but cannot afford one, Indiana Legal Services is here to provide high-quality representation and advocacy for those who qualify.
Established in 1966, Indiana Legal Services is the largest provider of free civil legal aid in the state. We serve clients who are facing critical legal issues that do not involve criminal charges. Our mission is to protect our clients' rights and ensure they have equal access to the justice system. By resolving disputes and providing legal counsel, we help stabilize families, prevent homelessness, and protect vulnerable populations, including seniors, domestic violence survivors, and veterans.
Vital Practice Areas and Legal Services Offered
The Evansville branch of Indiana Legal Services handles civil legal matters that directly impact our clients' quality of life. We focus on areas where legal representation can make a life-changing difference. Our primary practice areas include:
- Family Law and Domestic Violence: We represent survivors of domestic battery and abuse in securing protective orders, handling divorce cases, and resolving child custody and child support disputes. Our goal is to ensure the physical safety and long-term stability of abuse victims and their children.
- Housing and Eviction Prevention: Safe and stable housing is a fundamental necessity. We defend low-income tenants against wrongful evictions, represent clients in landlord-tenant disputes, address substandard housing conditions, and assist with foreclosure prevention and eviction sealing.
- Consumer Rights and Debt Relief: Financial hardships can lead to overwhelming debt and predatory legal actions. We assist clients with consumer law matters, including debt harassment, predatory lending, and civil consumer disputes, helping them find a path to financial recovery and stability.
- Public Benefits: Navigating government assistance programs can be incredibly challenging. We represent clients who have been wrongfully denied or terminated from essential public benefits, including Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability, and SNAP (food stamps).
- Immigrants and Language Rights: Through our Immigrants' and Language Rights Center (ILRC), we provide legal services to immigrants and non-English speakers. We assist with adjustment of status, asylum applications, VAWA petitions, and T and U visas, ensuring our clients receive services in their native languages.
Eligibility and the Application Process
Because Indiana Legal Services is a non-profit, federally funded organization, we must follow strict guidelines regarding eligibility and the types of cases we can accept. Here is what you need to know about applying for our free civil legal services:
- Income Guidelines: Our services are generally limited to households with incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. Some programs have different limits, particularly those serving seniors or specific grant-funded populations.
- Civil Matters Only: We only accept civil cases. We are categorically prohibited from representing clients in criminal defense cases or fee-generating cases (such as personal injury where an attorney is paid a percentage of the recovery).
- How to Apply: To apply for assistance, you can submit an online application through our website or contact our intake hotline. We do not accept walk-ins at our Evansville office. During the intake process, you will be asked questions about your household income, assets, and the nature of your legal issue.
