Faith-Based Legal Aid for Low-Income Neighbors
The Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is a non-profit, faith-based organization in Indianapolis, Indiana, dedicated to providing free legal services to those who cannot afford them. Founded in 1994 by a group of attorneys inspired to serve the underprivileged, the Clinic’s mission is to promote justice through legal representation and education as a way of demonstrating Christ’s love. For over 30 years, the Clinic has been a beacon of hope for low-income families, immigrants, and individuals facing diverse legal challenges. They believe that everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of their financial situation. If you are struggling with a legal issue and cannot afford to hire a lawyer, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic offers a compassionate and professional pathway to resolution.
Pro Bono Legal Services
The Clinic provides assistance in specific areas of civil law, focusing on helping clients overcome barriers to employment and housing:
- Housing and Consumer Law: Representing tenants in eviction hearings, foreclosure defense, and disputes with landlords or creditors.
- Expungement: helping individuals clear their criminal records to improve their opportunities for jobs and housing.
- Immigration: Providing low-cost or free assistance with green card applications, naturalization, asylum, and family reunification.
- Tax Controversies: Assisting low-income taxpayers in disputes with the IRS, including audits and appeals (Low Income Taxpayer Clinic).
- Wills and Estates: Drafting simple estate planning documents for eligible clients.
A Mission of Service
The Clinic operates with a small staff of attorneys and a large network of volunteer lawyers who donate their time. They serve thousands of clients annually, offering not just legal advice but also hope and dignity. It is important to note that the Clinic generally does not handle criminal defense, divorce, or child custody cases, focusing instead on areas where they can have the greatest impact on poverty alleviation. They also host intake sessions at various locations throughout the city to reach people where they are. For those needing to find legal aid that is driven by a heart for service, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is an invaluable community resource.
