Profile
Justice for All, Regardless of Income
The Legal Aid Society is a non-profit law firm with a historic mission: to pursue justice for people in poverty. Founded in 1921, it is the oldest legal services program in Kentucky and serves as a critical lifeline for thousands of low-income families in Louisville and the surrounding counties. The organization believes that equal access to justice is a fundamental right, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Operating from their headquarters in downtown Louisville, the Legal Aid Society provides free civil legal assistance to those who are most vulnerable, including the elderly, victims of domestic violence, and families facing homelessness. ⚖️
Vital Community Services
Legal Aid Society focuses on civil cases that affect the basic necessities of life. They do not handle criminal cases, but they are fierce advocates in courtrooms where livelihoods and safety are at stake.
- Housing Stability: defending tenants against unjust eviction and fighting for safe, sanitary living conditions.
- Family Safety: Securing Emergency Protective Orders (EPOs) for victims of domestic violence and assisting with divorce and custody.
- Economic Stability: Helping clients access government benefits (SNAP, Medicaid) and handling expungements to improve employment prospects.
- Consumer Protection: Protecting the elderly and vulnerable from predatory lending, scams, and unfair debt collection practices.
Downtown Hub of Advocacy
The organization is based at 416 West Muhammad Ali Blvd, in the heart of downtown Louisville. This location is central and accessible, ensuring that clients from all over the city can reach their attorneys. The office is staffed by a dedicated team of lawyers, paralegals, and social workers who approach every case with compassion and determination. They also leverage a robust network of volunteer attorneys from the private bar to expand their reach. In addition to direct representation, Legal Aid conducts community education workshops to empower citizens with knowledge of their rights.
We believe that true justice requires a system that works for everyone. We are here to level the playing field.
A Legacy of Service
For over a century, the Legal Aid Society has been a pillar of the Louisville community. 💬 Their services are available to households with incomes at or below 125% to 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. While they do not charge for their services, the quality of representation is top-tier, often involving complex impact litigation that changes laws and improves lives across the state. If you cannot afford an attorney, the Legal Aid Society may be your strongest ally.
