Profile
Justice for All, Regardless of Income
Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) is a pillar of the Maryland legal community, headquartered in downtown Baltimore. Founded in 1981, this non-profit organization was established with a vital mission: to provide quality civil legal services to low-income Marylanders who otherwise would be forced to navigate the complexities of the legal system alone. For over four decades, MVLS has connected thousands of clients with a vast network of volunteer attorneys, CPAs, and enrolled agents who donate their time and expertise. The organization believes that justice should not be a luxury reserved for those who can afford it. By removing financial barriers to legal counsel, MVLS helps stabilize families, prevent homelessness, and ensure economic security for the state’s most vulnerable residents.
Critical Legal Services
MVLS provides full representation and legal advice in a wide array of civil matters that affect basic human needs:
- Family Law: Assisting with divorce, custody disputes, and adoption, helping to create stable home environments for children and families.
- Housing and Real Estate: Defending against foreclosure and tax sale, resolving landlord-tenant disputes, and helping families preserve homeownership through deed changes (My Home, My Deed, My Legacy program).
- Consumer Protection: representing individuals in bankruptcy proceedings (Chapter 7), fighting debt collection harassment, and resolving contract disputes.
- Tax Controversy: One of the few low-income taxpayer clinics in the state, helping resolve disputes with the IRS and state tax authorities.
- Expungement: Helping individuals clear their criminal records to remove barriers to employment and housing.
A Community of Caring
Located in the Charles Center, MVLS operates not just as a law firm, but as a community hub for justice. They leverage the skills of over 1,700 legal professionals to serve clients in Baltimore and across the state. In addition to direct representation, the organization runs various clinics and outreach programs to educate the public about their legal rights. Whether helping a senior citizen create a will or assisting a veteran with a consumer issue, the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service stands as a beacon of hope and fairness. If you are facing a civil legal crisis and cannot afford an attorney, MVLS is there to help bridge the gap.
