Bridging the Gap in Legal Access
Central Minnesota Legal Services (CMLS) is a dedicated non-profit law firm committed to providing high-quality legal representation to low-income individuals in Minneapolis and the surrounding counties. Operating in close partnership with other legal aid organizations, CMLS focuses on the critical intersection of family law and poverty. Their mission is to ensure that the justice system is accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, particularly when basic human needs like safety, shelter, and family stability are at risk. Through their Volunteer Attorney Program, they leverage the resources of the private bar to expand their reach and impact.
Family Law and Domestic Abuse
The core of CMLS’s work revolves around stabilizing families in crisis. They provide compassionate and aggressive representation for victims of domestic abuse who are navigating the legal system. Their services include:
- Orders for Protection: Helping survivors obtain the legal shielding they need to stay safe from abusers.
- Divorce and Custody: Representing clients in contentious family law matters to ensure fair custody arrangements and financial support.
- Guardian ad Litem: Acting as a voice for children in complex legal proceedings to ensure their best interests are prioritized.
The Volunteer Attorney Program
A unique and vital component of CMLS is its administration of the Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP). This initiative matches private attorneys who wish to do pro bono work with low-income clients who need help with civil legal issues. By coordinating these efforts, CMLS significantly increases the number of people who can receive legal help in areas such as:
- Consumer Debt: assisting individuals facing harassment from creditors or unfair collection practices.
- Expungement: Helping people clear their criminal records to remove barriers to employment and housing.
- Housing Disputes: providing counsel for landlord-tenant issues that do not fall under standard eviction defense.
Serving the Community
Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, CMLS serves as a critical resource for residents of Hennepin and Anoka counties. They operate with a philosophy of dignity and respect, understanding that their clients are often facing the most difficult moments of their lives. The staff and volunteer attorneys work collaboratively to navigate the procedural hurdles of the court system, empowering clients to move forward with their lives.
Justice should not have a price tag. If you are struggling with a family law issue or need civil legal assistance, Contact Central Minnesota Legal Services to see if you qualify for their free legal programs.
