Protecting the Legacy of Family Farmers
About Farmers Legal Action Group
Agriculture is more than an industry; it is a way of life that sustains our communities. Farmers Legal Action Group (FLAG) is a nonprofit law center located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, dedicated exclusively to providing legal services to family farmers. Founded in 1986 during the farm credit crisis, FLAG has spent nearly four decades fighting to keep farmers on the land. If you need to find a lawyer who understands the intricate regulations of the USDA, crop insurance disputes, or farm loan programs, FLAG is the nation’s premier legal resource for agricultural justice. Their office is situated in the historic Landmark Towers in downtown Saint Paul, serving as a hub for advocacy and education.
FLAG does not function like a traditional law firm. Instead of billing hourly for profit, they operate through grants and support to provide accessible legal assistance to those who feed America. They have successfully litigated landmark class-action cases involving discrimination against minority farmers and have secured billions of dollars in debt relief and damages for their clients. If you are looking to hire a lawyer or seek counsel regarding foreclosure, disaster assistance, or fair lending practices, FLAG offers unmatched expertise. Their mission is to ensure that the legal system works for the people who work the soil, providing a powerful voice for family farms against corporate consolidation and unfair policies.
Specialized Legal Support
FLAG provides targeted legal assistance in areas critical to farm viability:
- Farm Finance and Credit: Assisting farmers with loan restructuring, foreclosure defense, and navigating FSA (Farm Service Agency) programs.
- Discrimination: Representing minority and socially disadvantaged farmers in civil rights claims against government agencies.
- Disaster Assistance: Helping producers access federal relief funds following droughts, floods, and pandemics.
- Contracts: Reviewing production contracts to protect farmers from unfair terms in livestock and poultry integration.
- Bankruptcy: Providing guidance on Chapter 12 bankruptcy and debt settlement options specific to agriculture.
Why Turn to FLAG?
For over 35 years, FLAG has been the legal shield for the family farm. They have provided services to more than 80,000 farmers and are recognized nationally for their ”Farmers’ Guides” which explain complex laws in plain English. Unlike commercial firms, their bottom line is justice, not profit. When you need an attorney who is deeply committed to the survival of rural communities and the rights of independent producers, Farmers Legal Action Group is the advocate you can trust.
