Profile
Access to Justice for Estate Planning
Montana Generational Justice (MGJ) is a dedicated non-profit organization based in Helena, Montana, committed to providing accessible estate planning legal services to underserved populations. Established as a 501(c)(3) public charity in 2015, MGJ was created to bridge the gap for Montanans who need essential legal documents but cannot afford the high costs of private counsel. The organization operates with a mission to prevent the financial abuse of seniors and to ensure that every individual, regardless of their financial status, has the opportunity to decide how their legacy is preserved and passed down.
MGJ utilizes a network of volunteer attorneys and paralegals to deliver its services, often conducting clinics via Zoom or telephone to reach residents in rural and remote areas of the state. This innovative approach allows them to serve clients from all corners of Montana without requiring travel. The organization is particularly focused on helping Native Americans, veterans, and seniors. By providing low-cost or no-cost legal assistance, Montana Generational Justice empowers individuals to secure their assets, designate decision-makers, and protect their families from future legal complications.
Specialized Legal Programs
Montana Generational Justice offers targeted programs to meet specific community needs:
- Modest Means Program: Providing estate planning services on a sliding fee scale for individuals who do not qualify for free legal aid but cannot afford standard market rates. This includes the drafting of Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Living Wills.
- Indian Wills Clinics: Addressing the unique legal needs of Native Americans, specifically regarding trust land and federal regulations. MGJ volunteers are trained to draft Indian Wills that comply with the American Indian Probate Reform Act (AIPRA).
- Sponsorship Clinics: Partnering with hospitals, senior centers, and other organizations to host events where participants can complete their advance directives and estate plans.
- Financial Abuse Prevention: Educating the community on the signs of financial exploitation and providing legal tools to prevent it.
