Profile
Exclusive Legal Aid for UNL Students
Student Legal Services (SLS) is a unique legal resource located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Operated by the ASUN Student Government, this office provides free legal advice and representation exclusively to currently enrolled UNL students. The service is staffed by licensed, experienced attorneys-Jeffrey White, Randi Molvar, and Bailey Petty-who understand the specific challenges young adults and students face. Funded entirely by student fees, SLS ensures that financial barriers do not prevent students from accessing justice. Whether a student is dealing with a landlord dispute, a traffic ticket, or a minor criminal infraction, SLS offers a confidential and supportive environment to resolve legal issues effectively.
Tailored Legal Services
While SLS does not handle every type of legal case (for example, they cannot represent students in felonies or cases against the university), they specialize in the areas most relevant to the student population:
- Criminal Defense Lawyers: Defending students against misdemeanors such as Minor in Possession (MIP), DUI/DWI, and disorderly conduct citations.
- Tenant Rights Lawyers: Reviewing leases before students sign them and representing tenants in disputes over security deposits and repairs.
- Traffic Ticket Lawyers: Assisting with the resolution of speeding tickets and other moving violations to minimize the impact on driving records.
- Divorce Lawyers: Handling uncontested divorce cases where there are no children or real estate involved.
- Estate Planning Lawyers: Drafting simple wills and powers of attorney, which are essential for students traveling abroad.
Educational Approach
The goal of Student Legal Services is not just to win cases, but to educate students about their rights and responsibilities under the law. The attorneys take the time to explain the legal process in plain English, empowering students to make informed decisions. By catching legal problems early, such as a lease review, they often prevent issues from escalating into costly lawsuits. For cases outside their scope, such as personal injury or complex family law, they provide trusted referrals to the private bar. This service is a vital safety net for the Husker community, ensuring that legal troubles do not derail a student’s education.
Located in the Nebraska Union
Conveniently situated in the heart of City Campus, the SLS office is easy for students to reach between classes. The office is located within the Nebraska Union, the central hub of student life. Appointments can be scheduled online or by phone, making it simple for busy students to get the help they need.
