Profile
Equal Justice for All New Mexicans
New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) is a critical lifeline for low-income individuals and families across the state, dedicated to ensuring that poverty is not a barrier to justice. Located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, at 505 Marquette Ave NW, Suite 700, this non-profit law firm provides high-quality legal advocacy for those who cannot afford private counsel. Founded in 1954, NMLA has spent decades fighting for the basic human needs of the community: safety, shelter, and economic stability. We understand that legal problems often strike the most vulnerable among us, and our mission is to be a voice for the voiceless in the legal system.
Essential Civil Legal Services
We focus our resources on civil legal matters that have the greatest impact on our clients’ lives and well-being. We do not handle criminal cases, but we provide robust representation in areas that affect your family and your home.
- Family Law and Domestic Violence: We are fierce advocates for survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and stalking. We assist with Orders of Protection, custody disputes, and divorce proceedings to help survivors escape violence and rebuild their lives safely.
- Housing Stability: We fight wrongful evictions, foreclosures, and unsafe housing conditions. Our team works to prevent homelessness and ensure that landlords seek to follow the law.
- Economic Security: We help individuals access the public benefits they are entitled to, such as unemployment insurance, SNAP, and Medicaid. We also assist with consumer debt issues and protection against predatory lending.
- Taxpayer Assistance: Our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic helps resolve disputes with the IRS, ensuring that working families receive their proper tax credits and refunds.
