Profile
Equal Access to Justice
For thousands of low-income New Mexicans, the legal system can seem out of reach. New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to changing that reality by providing high-quality civil legal assistance to those who cannot afford a private attorney. Formed in 2003 through the merger of several regional legal aid societies (with roots dating back to the 1950s), NMLA serves as a lifeline for families facing housing crises, domestic violence, and economic hardship. If you are struggling with a civil legal problem and need a lawyer in Santa Fe but cannot afford one, New Mexico Legal Aid offers the advocacy and support you need to secure your rights and safety.
Critical Legal Services
NMLA focuses on civil legal issues that affect the basic needs of life, providing representation, advice, and education.
- Housing and Eviction Defense: Fighting to keep families in their homes by defending against unjust evictions, foreclosures, and housing discrimination.
- Domestic Violence: assisting survivors of abuse with Orders of Protection, divorce, and custody matters to help them build safe, independent lives.
- Economic Security: Helping clients access public benefits (SNAP, Medicaid, SSI) and resolving issues with unemployment insurance.
- Consumer Rights: Protecting individuals from predatory lending, debt collection harassment, and scams.
Serving the Community
The Santa Fe office, located on Rodeo Park Drive, is a hub for legal services in Northern New Mexico. NMLA attorneys and staff are committed to being a voice for the voiceless. They offer services in English and Spanish and work tirelessly to remove barriers to justice. While they do not handle criminal cases, their work in the civil sector is vital for the stability of the community. Assistance is provided based on income eligibility and case priorities, ensuring that resources are directed to those in the greatest need.
