Profile
Equal Justice for All
The Cuyahoga County Public Defender’s Office is a cornerstone of the legal system in Northeast Ohio, dedicated to the principle that quality legal representation should not depend on a person’s ability to pay. Located in downtown Cleveland on West Lakeside Avenue, this office provides zealous advocacy for indigent adults and juveniles who are accused of crimes or facing the loss of their liberty. Led by Chief Public Defender Cullen Sweeney, the office is staffed by a diverse team of skilled attorneys, investigators, and social workers who work collaboratively to protect the constitutional rights of their clients. 👨⚖️
The Public Defender’s Office is not just a government agency; it is a law firm for the community. They handle thousands of cases each year, ranging from minor misdemeanors to the most serious felonies, including capital murder. Their holistic approach to defense goes beyond the courtroom. Recognizing that legal problems often stem from underlying social issues, the office connects clients with resources for mental health treatment, substance abuse recovery, and housing assistance. They also have a dedicated Expungement division (located in Suite 200) that helps eligible individuals seal their criminal records, removing barriers to employment and education.

- Felony Division: representing clients charged with serious crimes in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas.

They are fearless advocates who hold the state to its burden of proof and ensure that the voices of the marginalized are heard. The office is also active in community outreach and legal reform efforts, striving to create a more just and equitable society for all residents of Cuyahoga County. 🏛
Conveniently located across from the Justice Center, the office is easily accessible to clients and their families. While they are court-appointed for criminal matters, their dedication to their clients rivals that of any private firm.
