Profile
Upholding Justice for All Vermonters
The Office of the Vermont Defender General is the cornerstone of the state’s commitment to equal justice, providing constitutionally mandated legal representation to indigent individuals across Vermont. Established in 1972, our office ensures that every person, regardless of their financial situation, has access to skilled and zealous legal advocacy. Located in Montpelier, our central office, along with seven county staff offices, forms a dedicated network of approximately 40 attorneys, investigators, case managers, and support staff. We are tasked with the profound responsibility of defending liberty and upholding the rule of law. Our mission is not only to represent individual clients but also to serve all citizens of Vermont by ensuring the criminal justice system operates fairly, efficiently, and with the utmost integrity. 🏛️ We handle around 20,000 cases annually, a testament to our extensive reach and critical role within the state’s legal framework.

Specialized Divisions for Vulnerable Populations
Recognizing that certain legal matters require specialized knowledge, the Office of the Defender General operates several dedicated divisions to serve specific and often vulnerable populations. This focused approach allows us to provide a higher level of expertise and support to those facing unique legal challenges within the justice system. These divisions are staffed by attorneys and professionals who are passionate about their respective fields of law.
- Juvenile Defense: We provide counsel to children involved in juvenile delinquency proceedings and represent the interests of children in need of care and supervision (CHINS) cases. Our goal is to protect the rights and futures of our youngest clients. 🧒

Our Commitment to Public Service
The Office of the Defender General is more than a legal service provider; it is a public institution dedicated to the principle of equal justice. In addition to direct representation, we manage a complex system of over 100 contract attorneys and ad hoc counsel to handle conflicts and ensure broad coverage across the state. We provide representation in a variety of other critical proceedings, including probation or parole revocation hearings and extradition matters. This comprehensive system ensures that no person’s rights are compromised due to their inability to afford a lawyer.
