Profile
Upholding Justice at the Office of the Public Defender
The right to legal counsel is a cornerstone of the American justice system. The Office of the Public Defender in Phoenix, Arizona, is dedicated to ensuring that this right is preserved for every citizen, regardless of their financial status. Serving Maricopa County, our office provides high-quality legal representation to individuals who are unable to afford private counsel. We handle a vast array of cases, ranging from felonies and misdemeanors to juvenile delinquency and mental health proceedings. Our team of dedicated attorneys, investigators, and support staff work tirelessly to protect the constitutional rights of our clients. While you cannot simply walk in to order a lawyer like a commercial service, if you are facing criminal charges and cannot afford to find a lawyer on your own, the court may appoint our office to represent you. We stand as a shield against injustice, ensuring that every voice is heard in the courtroom.
Our Legal Responsibilities
We are mandated by the Constitution to provide defense services for indigent persons in various legal matters.
- Criminal Defense: We represent clients accused of crimes in the Superior Court and Justice Courts. This includes serious felonies, drug offenses, and violent crimes. We investigate the facts, challenge the prosecution’s evidence, and advocate for the best possible outcome.
- Juvenile Defense: Children facing legal trouble require specialized attention. Our juvenile division focuses on rehabilitation and protecting the future of young people involved in delinquency or dependency actions.
- Mental Health Proceedings: We advocate for individuals facing court-ordered mental health treatment (Title 36), ensuring their civil liberties are respected during the commitment process.
- Appeals: Justice does not always end with a verdict. Our appellate division reviews cases for legal errors and fights to overturn unjust convictions.
Committed to the Community
The Office of the Public Defender is more than just a law firm; we are a vital part of the Phoenix community.
- Qualified Attorneys: Our staff includes some of the most experienced trial lawyers in the state. Many have handled capital cases and complex litigation that rivals any private firm.
- Holistic Defense: We understand that legal problems often stem from social issues. We work to connect clients with social services, housing, and treatment programs to help break the cycle of recidivism.
- Due Process for All: We believe that the quality of justice a person receives should not depend on how much money they have. We fight every day to level the playing field.
