Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI) is a historic non-profit law firm located in downtown Wilmington, Delaware. Since 1946, CLASI has been dedicated to combating injustice through creative and persistent civil legal advocacy. We provide free legal services to the most vulnerable members of our community, including individuals with disabilities, older citizens, victims of domestic violence, and those living in poverty. Our mission is to ensure that the legal system works for everyone, not just those who can afford an attorney. By removing legal barriers to health, safety, and independence, we help our clients build stable and dignified lives.
Housing and Fair Housing
We believe everyone deserves a safe place to live. Our Housing Unit defends tenants against eviction, fights housing discrimination, and works to improve substandard housing conditions. We assist with:
- Eviction Defense: Preventing homelessness by representing tenants in court.
- Fair Housing: Advocating for victims of discrimination based on race, disability, or family status.
- Public Housing: Helping residents navigate complex rules and regulations to keep their vouchers and homes.
Disabilities and Elder Law
As Delaware’s designated Protection and Advocacy system, CLASI protects the rights of people with physical and mental disabilities. We also have a dedicated Elder Law Program for citizens age 60 and over, addressing issues such as:
- Abuse and Neglect: protecting seniors and individuals with disabilities from exploitation.
- Access to Services: Ensuring clients receive the medical and community-based support they are entitled to.
- Powers of Attorney: assisting with advance directives and guardianship matters.
Domestic Violence and Immigration
Our firm provides critical legal support to survivors of domestic violence and immigrant victims of crime. We help clients obtain Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders and navigate the immigration system to secure legal status through U-Visas, T-Visas, and VAWA petitions, empowering them to escape abusive environments and start anew.
