Profile
Justice for All in Northeast Indiana
The Volunteer Lawyer Program (VLP) of Northeast Indiana is a vital non-profit organization dedicated to providing civil legal assistance to low-income residents of Fort Wayne and the surrounding region. Unlike a private law firm, the VLP operates on a pro bono model, leveraging the generosity of local private attorneys who donate their time and expertise to help those who cannot afford legal counsel. ⚖️ Located in downtown Fort Wayne, the program serves as a bridge between the justice system and vulnerable populations, ensuring that economic status does not determine one’s ability to protect their rights in court.
Essential Community Legal Services
The VLP focuses on civil legal matters that affect the basic needs of individuals and families. They do not handle criminal cases. Their services range from legal advice clinics to full representation in court.
- Family Law: Assisting with divorce, child custody, guardianship, and adoption for qualified low-income families.
- Housing & Consumer: Helping tenants facing eviction, homeowners facing foreclosure, and individuals dealing with debt collection issues.
- Pro Se Clinics: Hosting workshops to guide individuals who are representing themselves in court, helping them complete forms and understand procedures.
- Elder Law: providing legal support for seniors regarding wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives.
Central Downtown Hub
The VLP office is located at 347 West Berry Street, conveniently situated near the Allen County Bar Association and the local courts. This downtown location is accessible to many of the clients they serve. The staff at VLP works tirelessly to screen applicants and match them with volunteer attorneys. It is important to note that because they rely on volunteers, they cannot accept every case, but they strive to provide resources or referrals to everyone who seeks their help.
We believe that equal access to justice is a fundamental right. We are here to serve the community and support those in need.
A Network of Giving
The success of the Volunteer Lawyer Program is built on the dedication of hundreds of local lawyers who give back to their community. 💬 Services are provided at no cost to clients who meet federal poverty guidelines. If you are facing a civil legal issue and cannot afford an attorney, the VLP offers a potential lifeline to secure the legal advocacy you deserve.
