Profile
A Century of Service to Immigrants
The International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit (IIMD) is a historic non-profit organization that has been a beacon of hope for immigrants in Detroit since 1919. Located in the city’s Cultural Center, just steps from the Detroit Institute of Arts, the IIMD provides critical low-cost legal and social services to foreign-born residents. While not a traditional corporate law firm, its Legal Immigration Department is staffed by experienced immigration attorneys and Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representatives who offer high-quality legal counsel to those who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
For over 100 years, the Institute has dedicated itself to the mission of helping immigrants integrate into American society while celebrating the richness of their cultural heritage. The legal team at IIMD specializes in family-based immigration and naturalization, helping thousands of Detroiters become U.S. citizens. They understand that the immigration process is often the final hurdle to full participation in the American dream.
Affordable Legal Immigration Services
The IIMD offers a range of legal services focused on humanitarian and family needs:
- Naturalization & Citizenship: Assisting lawful permanent residents in completing the N-400 application, preparing for the citizenship test, and attending interviews.
- Green Card Renewals: Helping residents maintain their legal status through I-90 renewals and adjustments.
- Family Petitions: filing I-130 petitions to help keep families together.
- DACA Renewals: Supporting Dreamers in maintaining their deferred action status.
- Consultations: Offering professional legal consultations for a nominal fee (typically $50) to assess a client’s eligibility for benefits.
Beyond Legal Aid
What sets the International Institute apart is its holistic approach. In addition to legal filing, they offer Citizenship Classes to teach U.S. history and civics, English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, and workforce development programs. This comprehensive support system ensures that clients are not just legally documented, but also socially and economically empowered.
"We are a community of nations in one city. Our doors are open to help you navigate the path to citizenship with dignity and respect."
Located in the Cultural Center
The Institute is housed in its longtime home at 111 East Kirby Street. This location is easily accessible via public transit and is a landmark in the Midtown area. The staff is multicultural and multilingual, often able to assist clients in languages such as Arabic, Spanish, Polish, and French, breaking down communication barriers that often complicate legal matters.
If you are looking for trustworthy, affordable immigration assistance from an organization that cares about your success as a new American, the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit is your partner.
