Upholding Civil Rights and Fighting Discrimination in Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) is the official civil rights agency for the City of Philadelphia. Established by the City’s Home Rule Charter in 1951, the PCHR is dedicated to enforcing laws that prevent discrimination and to fostering positive intergroup relations throughout our diverse communities. We are not a private law firm, but a neutral government body empowered to investigate and resolve complaints of illegal discrimination. Our mission is to ensure that all people who live, work, and visit Philadelphia are treated with dignity and respect, and have equal access to opportunities in employment, housing, public accommodations, and city services. Our services are provided free of charge to the public. 🏛️
Enforcing Anti-Discrimination Laws
The PCHR has the legal authority to investigate formal complaints from individuals who believe they have been subjected to unlawful discrimination. Our jurisdiction covers a wide range of protected classes, including race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, marital status, and source of income, among others.
Our Core Areas of Enforcement:
- Workplace Discrimination and Harassment Lawyers: We are the primary body for filing complaints of workplace discrimination in Philadelphia. We investigate allegations of unfair treatment in hiring, firing, promotions, pay, and other terms of employment, as well as claims of workplace harassment.
- Housing Discrimination: We handle cases involving discrimination in the rental, sale, or financing of housing. This includes landlords who refuse to rent to families with children or individuals with disabilities who require reasonable accommodations.
- Public Accommodations Discrimination: The PCHR investigates claims of discrimination and unequal treatment in public places, such as restaurants, hotels, shops, and public transportation.
- Community Dispute Resolution: We provide mediation services to help resolve community-based conflicts and promote understanding and harmony among different groups.
Promoting Equality Through Education and Outreach
Beyond enforcement, a key part of our mission is proactive education. The PCHR works with community groups, businesses, and landlords to provide training and workshops on topics like fair housing laws, preventing workplace harassment, and celebrating diversity. By fostering dialogue and understanding, we aim to address the root causes of prejudice and build a more inclusive and equitable city for everyone. ⚖️
