Profile
Equal Justice for All Utahns
Access to justice should not be determined by the size of one’s wallet. Utah Legal Services (ULS) is a non-profit law firm committed to protecting the rights of low-income individuals and vulnerable populations across the state. Since 1976, ULS has provided free civil legal assistance to thousands of Utahns who would otherwise face the legal system alone. Whether dealing with a domestic violence situation or an unlawful eviction, the dedicated attorneys and staff at ULS work tirelessly to ensure fairness and stability for their clients. If you need to find a lawyer but cannot afford private counsel, ULS is a critical resource for essential legal needs.
Vital Legal Assistance Programs
ULS focuses on civil cases that impact the basic necessities of life, such as safety, shelter, and income. They do not handle criminal cases. Their services are divided into several key practice areas:
- Family Law: prioritizing safety for victims of domestic violence through protective orders, divorce, and custody proceedings.
- Housing: Defending tenants against eviction, preserving housing subsidies, and addressing unsafe living conditions.
- Public Benefits: Assisting with denials or terminations of Medicaid, Food Stamps (SNAP), and SSI/SSDI benefits.
- Senior Legal Help: Providing specialized services for Utahns aged 60 and over, including consumer protection and advance directives.
Community-Centered Advocacy
The organization is driven by a mission to enforce, protect, and defend the rights of the disadvantaged. ULS attorneys are not just legal representatives; they are advocates for systemic change and community empowerment. They offer educational workshops and self-help clinics to equip individuals with the knowledge to navigate legal challenges. If you urgently need a lawyer for a safety-critical issue, ULS has specific intake procedures to prioritize those in immediate danger. Services are available in multiple languages, including Spanish, ensuring that language barriers do not prevent access to justice.
Equal Justice Under Law is one of our nation’s most basic principles. However, economic realities often leave these promises unfulfilled. This is where Utah Legal Services comes in.
The Salt Lake City office is located in the James B. Lee Justice Center on Main Street. As a statewide program, ULS serves as a lifeline for thousands, proving that justice is a right, not a privilege.
