Profile
The Protection and Advocacy System for Virginia
The disAbility Law Center of Virginia (dLCV) is a unique non-profit legal organization dedicated to advancing the rights of people with disabilities. Designated as the state’s Protection and Advocacy (P&A) system, dLCV provides legal representation and advocacy services to ensure that Virginians with disabilities are free from abuse, neglect, and discrimination. Located at 1512 Willow Lawn Drive, the center employs a team of dedicated attorneys and advocates who fight for independence, choice, and self-determination.
Legal Advocacy Services
While not a traditional commercial law firm, dLCV functions as a specialized legal aid office, handling critical issues such as:
- Abuse and Neglect: Investigating and litigating cases where individuals with disabilities are harmed in institutions, group homes, or by service providers.
- Discrimination: Representing individuals who have been denied equal access to employment, housing, or public accommodations in violation of the ADA.
- Special Education: Advocating for children with disabilities to receive the Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) they are entitled to under federal law.
- Voting Rights: Ensuring that polling places are accessible and that people with disabilities can exercise their right to vote.
Mission-Driven Representation
dLCV operates independently of the state government, allowing it to zealously represent its clients’ interests. The organization provides its services free of charge to eligible individuals, supported by federal grants. Their attorneys are known for taking on systemic litigation that creates broad positive changes for the disability community across the Commonwealth.
