Profile
Justice for All West Virginians
Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is the state’s primary provider of civil legal aid and advocacy services. As a non-profit organization, its mission is to ensure that the most vulnerable citizens-including low-income families, seniors, victims of domestic violence, and people with disabilities-have equal access to the justice system. If you are facing a critical legal issue but cannot afford to hire a lawyer, Legal Aid of West Virginia offers free legal assistance to those who qualify based on income and case type.
Vital Legal Services
The organization focuses on high-priority civil matters that affect basic human needs. Their attorneys and advocates assist with:
- Domestic Violence: Securing protective orders and helping survivors escape abusive relationships.
- Housing: preventing eviction, foreclosure, and ensuring safe living conditions for tenants.
- Public Benefits: helping individuals access Social Security, Medicaid, SNAP, and unemployment benefits.
- Family Law: Handling custody and divorce cases, particularly where safety is a concern.
Community Impact
With a network of offices across the state, the Charleston location serves as a central hub for Kanawha County and surrounding areas. In addition to direct representation, they provide educational resources and self-help materials to empower individuals to advocate for themselves. The office at 922 Quarrier Street has been a long-standing resource in the community, though clients are encouraged to call for eligibility screening before visiting. Legal Aid of West Virginia strives to level the playing field, ensuring that justice is not just for those who can pay for it.
