Regional Transit and Paratransit Services

The Greater Hartford Transit District (GHTD) is a quasi-municipal corporation responsible for overseeing and improving public transportation in the Greater Hartford region. Headquartered at One Union Place, the District serves 16 member towns. Its primary operational responsibility is the administration of the ADA Paratransit Service, which provides door-to-door transportation for individuals with disabilities who are unable to use fixed-route bus services. Additionally, GHTD manages the ‘GHTD Link,’ an on-demand accessible rideshare service, and serves as a conduit for state and federal funding for transit-related capital projects.

Union Station Management

The District owns and operates the historic Hartford Union Station, a critical multimodal transportation hub. This facility connects residents and visitors to Amtrak, CTrail Hartford Line, CTtransit buses, and intercity bus carriers like Greyhound and Peter Pan. The District ensures the maintenance, security, and development of this landmark, creating a central gateway for travel throughout Connecticut and the Northeast.

Parking and Facilities

GHTD manages the Spruce Street Parking Lot, located immediately adjacent to Union Station. This facility provides paid parking options for commuters and travelers, including short-term and long-term spaces. The District also oversees the maintenance of bus shelters throughout its member towns and operates a Drug and Alcohol Testing Consortium for municipal employees in safety-sensitive positions.

Visitor Information

The administrative offices are located within the Union Station complex. While the station itself is open to the public for most of the day (closed overnight from 12:30 AM to 4:45 AM), the District’s business offices generally operate during standard weekday hours. Paratransit reservations can be made seven days a week. Visitors to the station should be aware of security protocols, including the prohibition of unattended luggage.
