Overview
New York State DMV – Harlem License Center
Office Overview
The Harlem License Center, located on the second floor of 5 West 125th Street, is a high-volume field office of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Serving the communities of Harlem, East Harlem, and Upper Manhattan, this facility allows residents to handle essential driver and vehicle transactions. It is important to note that this is a busy location with high demand; therefore, the DMV strictly enforces an appointment-only policy for nearly all in-person services. Walk-ins are generally turned away or directed to make a reservation online.
Services Offered
The Harlem office provides a comprehensive range of DMV services, including:
- Licensing: Applications for new Learner Permits, Driver Licenses, and Non-Driver ID cards. This location processes Real ID and Enhanced ID documents.
- Vehicle Transactions: Registration renewals, surrender of license plates, and issuance of vehicle titles.
- Testing: Written permit tests are administered here. (Note: Road tests are scheduled separately and take place at designated street locations, not at the office itself).
Important Restrictions
This office does not handle traffic ticket payments or hearings (these are handled by the Traffic Violations Bureau) and does not issue passports. Visitors must arrive on time for their appointment with all necessary documentation (proof of identity, date of birth, and residency) completed. Security screening is required upon entry.
