Profile
Fighting Hate, Seeking Justice, and Teaching Tolerance
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is one of the nation’s most prominent civil rights organizations and law firms. Founded in 1971 by lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr., the SPLC is headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement. Unlike traditional private practice firms, the SPLC is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society through high-impact litigation.
Strategic Litigation and Advocacy
The SPLC’s legal team handles landmark cases that set precedents and reform laws. Their work is typically pro bono, focused on systemic change rather than individual fee-based representation.
- Immigration Justice: Through the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative, they provide legal counsel to detained immigrants, fighting against Deportation and ensuring due process in immigration courts.
- Economic Justice: The center litigates to protect the poor from exploitation, challenging debtors’ prisons and unfair practices that criminalize poverty.
- Criminal Justice Reform: They work to reform the juvenile justice system and improve prison conditions, advocating for the rights of the incarcerated.
- LGBTQ Rights: The SPLC is a fierce advocate for Workplace Discrimination protections and equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
- Hate Group Monitoring: Beyond the courtroom, they are famous for tracking and exposing hate groups across the United States.
A Campus of Conscience
The SPLC’s headquarters is a landmark in downtown Montgomery. The campus includes the Civil Rights Memorial Center, designed by Maya Lin, which honors the martyrs of the movement. While they do not function as a standard ”walk-in” law firm for general legal matters, they are a critical resource for civil rights litigation and education. Their work continues to dismantle institutional racism and protect the promise of liberty and justice for all.
