Profile
Protecting Rights in Federal Court
The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Columbia is the primary defense organization for individuals facing federal charges in the nation’s capital. Established in 1991 under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, this office is dedicated to providing superior legal representation to those who are financially unable to retain private counsel. Unlike the local Public Defender Service, this office specifically handles cases within the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, navigating the complex and often severe landscape of federal law. 🇺🇸
Federal cases differ significantly from local prosecutions, involving different agencies (such as the FBI, DEA, and ATF), sentencing guidelines, and procedures. The attorneys at the Federal Public Defender’s office are specialists in this distinct arena. They possess a deep understanding of the United States Code and the Federal Rules of Evidence, ensuring that their clients receive a defense that is both technically precise and strategically sound. From white-collar investigations to complex conspiracy charges, these federal defenders are the shield between the accused and the full weight of the U.S. government.
Areas of Expertise
- Federal Felony Defense: Representation in high-stakes cases involving drug trafficking, fraud, firearms offenses, and cybercrimes.

- Probation & Supervised Release: defending clients accused of violating the terms of their federal supervision.
- Grand Jury Representation: Advising individuals who have been subpoenaed or are targets of federal grand jury investigations.
A Commitment to Equal Justice
The right to counsel is a cornerstone of American democracy, and the Federal Public Defender exists to uphold this right for everyone, regardless of their bank account balance. The office is staffed by a diverse team of trial lawyers, appellate specialists, investigators, and mitigation experts. They work tirelessly to humanize their clients in the eyes of the court and to challenge government overreach. Their work ensures that the scales of justice remain balanced, even when the opponent is the United States of America. ⚖️
