Profile
Constitutional Defense for All
The right to legal counsel is a cornerstone of the American justice system, ensuring that fair representation is not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. The Public Defender 2nd Judicial Circuit serves as the primary guardian of this right for the residents of Tallahassee and the surrounding counties (Leon, Gadsden, Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson, and Liberty). Led by the elected Public Defender, Jessica J. Yeary, this office provides vigorous legal representation to individuals who are facing criminal charges but cannot afford to hire an attorney. The dedicated team of assistant public defenders, investigators, and social workers works tirelessly to protect the liberty and dignity of their clients.
Comprehensive Legal Services
The office handles a vast array of cases, ensuring that the government is held to its burden of proof in every instance. From minor traffic offenses to serious felonies, the Public Defender’s office is equipped to manage complex litigation. They also provide representation in Juvenile Delinquency cases, advocating for the rehabilitation of youth in the system. If you have been appointed a public defender, you are gaining a legal team with significant courtroom experience and a deep commitment to justice.
- Criminal Defense: Representing indigent clients in misdemeanor and felony cases.
- Juvenile Defense: Protecting the rights and futures of minors in court.
- Appeals: challenging unjust convictions and sentences in higher courts.
- Mental Health: specialized defense for those with competency or mental health issues.
Community-Centered Advocacy
Located in the Leon County Courthouse complex on South Monroe Street, the office is deeply integrated into the local community. Jessica Yeary, elected in 2020, has brought a renewed focus on community engagement and holistic defense, addressing not just the legal case but the underlying issues facing clients. While you cannot ”hire” the Public Defender in the traditional commercial sense, their services are a vital resource provided by the Constitution to those who qualify. They stand as a shield against the power of the state, ensuring that justice is served for everyone, regardless of their financial status.
