Profile
Champions for Economic and Racial Justice
The Shriver Center on Poverty Law is a nationally recognized legal and advocacy organization based in Chicago, Illinois, dedicated to ending poverty and achieving economic and racial justice. Founded in 1967 and named after Sargent Shriver, the architect of the War on Poverty, the center has spent over five decades fighting for the rights of low-income individuals and communities. Unlike traditional law firms, the Shriver Center combines high-impact litigation with policy shaping and community organizing to dismantle the systemic barriers that trap people in poverty. Their attorneys and advocates work tirelessly to ensure that everyone has equal dignity, respect, and power under the law.
Systemic Legal Advocacy
The core of the Shriver Center’s work involves addressing the most pressing issues facing marginalized populations. They provide legal representation in cases that have the potential to set precedents and change laws for the better. Their practice areas are broad and intersectional, covering housing justice, employment equity, community safety, and access to public benefits. By representing individuals in strategic lawsuits, they aim to create ripple effects that benefit thousands. If you are a low-income worker facing unfair treatment or a tenant fighting discriminatory housing practices, the Shriver Center works to find a legal solution that addresses the root cause of the injustice.
- Housing Justice: Fighting for fair housing laws and tenant rights.
- Economic Opportunity: Advocating for fair wages and safe workplace conditions.
- Family Support: Protecting the rights of women and families in the foster system.
Leadership and Training
Beyond litigation, the Shriver Center is a hub for the national public interest law community. They train and connect lawyers and activists across the country, equipping them with the skills to be effective agents of change. Through their networks, they foster collaboration among legal aid providers to ensure that low-income clients receive the highest quality of representation possible. While they focus on systemic change, their work is grounded in the lived experiences of the people they serve, ensuring that the law acts as a tool for empowerment rather than oppression.
