Free Legal Protection for Domestic Violence Survivors
Escaping an abusive relationship is an act of immense courage, but navigating the legal system to secure protection can be overwhelming. The Protective Order Advocacy and Representation Project (POARP) is a vital legal service provided by the Women's Law Center of Maryland. Located directly within the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, this project offers free legal representation to victims of domestic violence who are seeking protective orders. The mission of POARP is to ensure that no survivor has to face their abuser in court alone. By providing skilled attorneys to advocate for victims during protective order hearings, the project significantly increases the likelihood of securing the legal protection necessary for safety and peace of mind.
Courtroom Advocacy and Safety
The core service of POARP is representation at Final Protective Order hearings. These hearings are critical, as a Final Protective Order can remain in effect for up to a year (or longer) and can include provisions for custody, financial support, and possession of the family home. The attorneys at POARP are experts in Maryland domestic violence law. They assist clients in presenting evidence, cross-examining witnesses, and making legal arguments to the judge. Beyond the courtroom, the project's advocates help survivors develop comprehensive safety plans, connecting them with shelters, counseling, and other community resources. If you are a victim of abuse and need to find a lawyer who will fight for your safety without cost, POARP is a lifeline.
Empowerment and Access to Justice
POARP is dedicated to empowering survivors by giving them a voice in the legal process. The project understands the dynamics of power and control inherent in abusive relationships and works to level the playing field. Services are available to victims of intimate partner violence, regardless of gender. In addition to representation, the staff provides critical information about the cycle of violence and the legal rights of victims in Maryland. By removing the financial barrier to legal counsel, POARP ensures that justice is accessible to those who need it most.
- Free Representation: No cost for legal services for eligible protective order cases.
- On-Site Location: Conveniently located inside the courthouse for immediate assistance.
- Holistic Support: Integration with social services to address housing and emotional needs.
The office is situated in Courthouse East on North Calvert Street. Survivors are encouraged to contact the office directly or visit during court hours to seek assistance. This project stands as a critical shield for the Baltimore community, dedicated to ending the cycle of violence.
