Profile
Justice for All: The Franklin County Public Defender
Equal Representation Under the Law
The Franklin County Public Defender’s Office stands as a critical pillar of the justice system in Central Ohio. Established in 1970, it is one of the largest and most comprehensive public defense offices in the state. Its mission is rooted in the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: to provide high-quality legal representation to indigent persons who are accused of crimes but cannot afford an attorney. Led by Director Mitchell ‘Mitch’ Williams, the office is staffed by a dedicated team of over 90 attorneys, along with social workers, investigators, and support staff. They handle thousands of cases annually, ranging from misdemeanors and traffic offenses to serious felonies and complex appeals. This team believes that a person’s financial status should never determine the quality of justice they receive.
Comprehensive Legal Services
- Criminal Defense: The office represents adults facing criminal charges in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas and the Franklin County Municipal Court. Their attorneys are present at arraignments, plea negotiations, and trials, fighting to protect the rights of the accused.
- Juvenile Justice: A specialized unit is dedicated to representing children in delinquency and custody proceedings. The office works not only to defend legal rights but also to connect youth with social services and rehabilitation programs to prevent future involvement with the system.
- Appellate Advocacy: The Appellate Unit handles appeals for clients who have been convicted, ensuring that legal errors made during trials are challenged in higher courts. They have a strong track record of winning reversals and setting important legal precedents.
More Than Just Lawyers
The Franklin County Public Defender’s Office takes a holistic approach to defense. Recognizing that legal problems are often intertwined with social issues, the office employs full-time social workers to assist clients with substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, and housing stability. This multidisciplinary approach aims to address the root causes of criminal behavior and reduce recidivism. While you cannot ‘hire’ the Public Defender in the traditional sense, if you are facing charges and cannot afford counsel, this office ensures you have a skilled advocate in your corner.
We stand as the shield for the vulnerable, ensuring that the promise of ‘equal justice for all’ is a reality, not just a slogan.
