Profile
Defending the Rights of the Indigent in Oklahoma County
The Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office stands as a critical institution in the local justice system, ensuring that quality legal representation is not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Located in the County Office Building in downtown Oklahoma City, this office is responsible for defending indigent individuals charged with crimes ranging from misdemeanors to capital felonies. For decades, under the leadership of the late Bob Ravitz, the office built a national reputation for excellence, challenging the notion that public defense is "lesser" representation.
Comprehensive Criminal Defense
The attorneys at the Public Defender’s Office are highly skilled litigators who handle thousands of cases each year. They are appointed by the court to represent clients who cannot afford private counsel. Their divisions include:
- Felony and Misdemeanor Defense: Aggressive representation for all state criminal charges filed in Oklahoma County.
- Juvenile Justice: Protecting the rights of minors in delinquency proceedings and deprived child cases.
- Capital Defense: A specialized team dedicated to defending clients facing the death penalty, a critical role in a state with high capital punishment rates.
- Appeals: Fighting wrongful convictions and unfair sentences in higher courts.
A Legacy of Justice
The office is renowned for its high standards and rigorous training. Public defenders here are fully licensed attorneys, many with years of specialized experience in criminal law. They work tirelessly to ensure that every client receives due process and a fair trial. The office also plays a vital role in the community, advocating for criminal justice reform and alternatives to incarceration for those with mental illness or substance abuse issues.
Eligibility and Access
Representation by the Public Defender is not automatic; you must apply and demonstrate financial need to the court. If you are charged with a crime and cannot afford to hire a lawyer, you should request an application at your arraignment. The office is located at 320 Robert S Kerr Ave, connected to the county courthouse complex. Whether negotiating a plea deal or arguing before a jury, the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office is the frontline of defense for the community’s most vulnerable citizens.
