Profile
Providing Equal Access to Justice for Over 50 Years
Since 1966, Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS) has been a beacon of hope and a pillar of the community in Pittsburgh and the surrounding counties of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, and Lawrence. As a nonprofit law firm, NLS is dedicated to a powerful mission: providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals, families, and victims of domestic violence. They believe that no one’s access to justice should be limited by their ability to pay. The dedicated team of attorneys and paralegals at NLS works tirelessly to ensure that the most vulnerable members of the community have a voice in the legal system, helping them protect their basic human needs, such as housing, income, and physical safety.
Comprehensive Civil Legal Aid for Those in Need
NLS provides expert legal assistance in a wide range of civil matters that are critical to the stability and well-being of their clients. By offering these services for free, they empower individuals to overcome legal barriers that would otherwise be insurmountable.
- Divorce and Family Law Lawyers: Assisting individuals, primarily victims of domestic violence, with critical family law issues. This includes representation in Protection From Abuse (PFA) order hearings, as well as matters of divorce, child custody, and child support.
- Housing Law: Representing tenants in eviction proceedings, fighting for safe and habitable living conditions, and addressing issues of housing discrimination. They are a crucial resource for those facing homelessness.
- Public Benefits and Financial Law: Helping clients obtain and maintain essential public benefits like unemployment compensation, Social Security Disability, and SNAP. They also offer counsel on consumer law issues, including utility service, debt collection, and bankruptcy, to help families achieve economic stability.
- Wills and Estate Planning: Providing assistance with the creation of simple wills and powers of attorney to ensure clients’ wishes are respected and their families are protected.
A Commitment to Community and Empowerment
Neighborhood Legal Services is more than just a law firm; it is a vital community partner. Through outreach, education, and direct representation, they empower thousands of individuals each year to stand up for their rights and improve their circumstances. Their work helps to level the playing field, ensuring that poverty is not a barrier to justice. By stabilizing families and preserving communities, NLS provides an essential service that strengthens the entire region. They are supported by a combination of public funding, grants, and private donations, all of which are essential to continuing their legacy of impactful service.
