Overview
General Overview
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Bridgeport serves as a full-service Hub Office for Fairfield County. Located at 95 Sylvan Avenue, this facility handles the complete range of motor vehicle and driver licensing transactions. Unlike smaller ‘limited service’ branches, the Bridgeport Hub is equipped to process new driver’s license applications, complex registration issues, title transfers, and commercial driver’s license (CDL) knowledge testing. It is one of the busiest DMV offices in the state, serving a high volume of residents from Bridgeport, Stratford, Fairfield, and Trumbull.
Services and Transactions
As a main hub, this office provides:
- Driver’s Licenses: Renewals, duplicates, and new issues for standard, Verified (Real ID), and Drive Only licenses.
- Vehicle Registration: New registrations, plate transfers, cancellations, and temporary plates.
- Learner’s Permits: Knowledge testing for new drivers (strictly by appointment).
- CDL Services: Commercial learner’s permits and knowledge exams.
- Disability Services: Processing applications for permanent or temporary disability placards.
Appointment Policy
Strict Appointment Policy: The CT DMV operates primarily on an appointment-only basis. Walk-in services are extremely limited and generally not available for routine transactions like license renewals or registration. Residents must schedule an appointment online through the official CT.gov portal before visiting. Arriving without an appointment will likely result in being turned away. Please arrive no more than 15 minutes before your scheduled time to avoid overcrowding.
Security and Payment
Upon entering the building, visitors will pass through a security checkpoint. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind. When paying for services, the office accepts cash, personal checks, money orders, and credit/debit cards. Note that credit and debit card transactions are subject to a convenience fee. Checks must be made payable to ‘DMV’.
