Department Overview and History
The Bridgeport Police Department (BPD) is the primary law enforcement agency for Connecticut’s largest city. Headquartered at 300 Congress Street in downtown Bridgeport, the department was officially established in 1837 and has grown to become a modern force dedicated to public safety and community partnership. The headquarters serves as the central command for the city’s patrol divisions, the Detective Bureau, and administrative services. While officers patrol the city 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the headquarters building is the main point of access for citizens seeking non-emergency services, filing reports in person, or meeting with specific units such as the Youth Bureau or Internal Affairs.
Records and Reports
One of the most frequented offices at 300 Congress Street is the Records Division. Residents visit this window to obtain copies of accident reports, incident reports, and to conduct background checks. It is critical to note that while the police station lobby is open 24/7, the Records Division typically operates on a standard business schedule (Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Strict payment policies apply: the division generally accepts cash only for in-person transactions and money orders for mail requests; personal checks and credit cards are often not accepted for report fees. Victims of crimes should contact the Victim Services Unit, also housed here, for assistance with reports and court procedures.
Permits and Services
The department handles various municipal and state permits. The Permits Division processes applications for Pistol Permits (fingerprinting is often required and may have specific hours, usually mid-week), vendor licenses, and special event permits. Residents must also register their home or business security alarms with the department to avoid fines for false alarms. The Sex Offender Registry unit is also based at headquarters, managing compliance with ”Megan’s Law.” For those wishing to report quality-of-life issues or anonymous tips, the department maintains several hotlines, but for active emergencies, dialing 911 is always imperative.
Security and Location
As a secure law enforcement facility, visitors to the Bridgeport Police Headquarters must undergo security screening. Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited inside the building unless carried by authorized law enforcement personnel. Valid government-issued photo identification is required for all administrative services. The headquarters is centrally located, just a short walk from the Bridgeport Transportation Center, making it easily accessible via Metro-North, Amtrak, and GBT buses. Parking is available at metered spots on the street or in nearby public garages; there is no designated free visitor parking lot for the station.
