The Hartford Internal Audit Department, headquartered within Hartford City Hall at 550 Main Street, is an independent appraisal body dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the city’s operations. Reporting to the Internal Audit Commission, this department conducts objective reviews of city departments, the Board of Education, and quasi-government agencies. Their mission is to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse while promoting efficiency and accountability in municipal government. The department manages the city’s Fraud Hotline and performs risk-based audits on financial systems, grant compliance, and operational procedures.

Department Access
The Internal Audit Department is located on the 3rd floor (Suite 304) of the historic Municipal Building (City Hall). Access is generally by appointment, particularly for confidential discussions regarding audit findings or complaints. Visitors must pass through security at the Main Street or Arch Street entrances. The office operates during standard City Hall business hours. Public transit users can easily access the building via numerous bus lines stopping at the Old State House or Main Street.
