Overview
Cook County Bureau of Finance
The Cook County Bureau of Finance, located in the Cook County Administration Building at 69 West Washington Street, is the central financial management agency for the county government. This bureau is responsible for ensuring the long-term fiscal health and stability of Cook County through strategic planning, accounting, and revenue management. It oversees several critical departments, including the Comptroller, Budget and Management Services, Risk Management, and the Department of Revenue.
Department of Revenue & Taxation
While property taxes are handled by the Treasurer, the Bureau of Finance’s Department of Revenue administers and collects Home Rule Taxes. These include taxes on alcohol, cigarettes, gasoline, parking, and amusement. Business owners and individuals can visit this office to register for tax accounts, file returns, and make payments for these specific county-level obligations.
Fiscal Responsibilities
The Bureau acts as the fiscal guardian of the county, managing debt service, procurement contracts, and the annual budget. The Risk Management division handles workers’ compensation and claims against the county. The office operates with a focus on transparency and accountability, providing financial reports and compliance data to the public and county board.
Building Access
Visitors to the Cook County Administration Building must pass through security screening in the lobby. Valid photo identification is required for entry. The building is accessible to people with disabilities, and paid public parking is available in nearby garages, though public transit is the recommended mode of travel due to the central Loop location.
