Overview
Department of Streets and Sanitation
Department Functions
The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS), located in City Hall, is one of the largest non-emergency departments in the city. It is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of Chicago’s streets and alleys. 🚛♻️ The office in Room 1107 serves as the administrative headquarters for the commissioner and executive staff. While operations are decentralized across various ward yards, this office coordinates citywide services.
Core Services
- Sanitation: Weekly garbage collection and blue cart recycling services for residential buildings with four units or fewer.
- Forestry: Trimming, planting, and removal of city-owned parkway trees.
- Street Operations: Snow and ice removal, graffiti removal, and street sweeping.
- Rodent Control: Investigation and abatement of rodent complaints.
Service Requests
Residents needing to request services (such as a missed trash pickup, tree trim, or pothole repair) should generally call 311 or use the Chi311 app rather than visiting the administrative office in person. 📵 The City Hall location primarily handles high-level administrative inquiries and departmental oversight.
