Overview
Chicago Federal Executive Board
Interagency Coordination & Workforce Support
The Chicago Federal Executive Board (FEB) is located within the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building at 230 South Dearborn Street. Established to foster communication and collaboration among the numerous federal agencies operating in the Chicago area, the FEB serves as a critical liaison between Washington D.C. and local federal field offices. It is not a direct public service window for things like passports or social security benefits, but rather an administrative body that coordinates emergency preparedness, workforce development, and intergovernmental partnerships across the region.
Functions & Responsibilities
The Board’s primary mission involves unifying the federal community to operate more efficiently. Key activities managed from this office include:
- Emergency Preparedness: Coordinating continuity of operations (COOP) plans for federal agencies in Chicago during disasters or emergencies.
- Workforce Development: Organizing training programs, dispute resolution services, and leadership development for federal employees.
- Combined Federal Campaign (CFC): Overseeing the annual charitable giving program for federal staff.
Building Security & Access
As a tenant of the Kluczynski Federal Building, access to the FEB office is controlled by strict federal security protocols. Visitors must pass through airport-style security screening, including metal detectors and x-ray machines for bags. A valid government-issued photo ID (Real ID compliant) is required for entry. Weapons, pepper spray, and sharp objects are strictly prohibited. While the building houses public-facing agencies like the Passport Agency and IRS, the FEB suite itself is generally open to federal employees and authorized partners rather than the general public.
Location & Transit
The facility is situated in the heart of the Chicago Loop, directly adjacent to the Flamingo sculpture by Alexander Calder. It is exceptionally well-served by public transit, with the Jackson Blue Line station located right outside and the Red Line nearby. Numerous bus routes stop at the intersection of Dearborn and Jackson.
