Overview
National Archives at Chicago
The National Archives at Chicago is a significant federal repository located at 7358 South Pulaski Road, near the Ford City Mall. As part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), this facility holds permanent historical records created by federal agencies and courts in the Great Lakes Region, covering Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The archives serve historians, genealogists, and researchers seeking original documents that tell the story of the nation’s Midwest heritage.
Collections and Research
The holdings include millions of documents ranging from the 1800s to the late 20th century. Note: A significant portion of these records is currently being transferred to the National Archives facility in Kansas City. Researchers are strongly advised to verify the location of specific records before planning a visit.
- Court Records: Bankruptcy, civil, criminal, and naturalization case files from federal courts in the region.
- Agency Records: Documents from the Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and other federal entities operating in the Midwest.
- Genealogy: Census records (on microfilm) and naturalization documents are frequently used for family history research.
Facility Access
Access to the research room is by appointment only. Researchers must contact the facility in advance to schedule a visit and ensure the records they need are on-site and available. Upon arrival, visitors must go through security screening. Strict rules apply to the research room to preserve documents: no pens, food, or bags are allowed (lockers are provided), and loose paper or pencils must be used.
