About the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS)
The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) Chicago Field Office is the federal law enforcement branch of the U.S. Department of State in the Midwest. Located in the Kluczynski Federal Building in downtown Chicago, this office is responsible for a wide range of investigative and protective missions across a multi-state jurisdiction including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Primary Missions
- Passport and Visa Fraud: Investigating fraudulent issuance, acquisition, and use of U.S. passports and visas, often in collaboration with other federal agencies.
- Dignitary Protection: Providing security for the U.S. Secretary of State and visiting foreign dignitaries, including heads of state and royalty, during their travel within the Midwest.
- Counterintelligence: conducting background investigations for security clearances and protecting Department of State personnel and facilities.
Location and Contact
The office is situated at 230 South Dearborn Street. As a federal law enforcement agency, it is not a walk-in facility for general passport services (which are handled by the Passport Agency or acceptance facilities). Contact is primarily for official law enforcement business or reporting specific fraud tips. Visitors must undergo rigorous security screening consistent with high-level federal facilities.
