Overview
CPD Evidence and Recovered Property Section (ERPS)
The Evidence and Recovered Property Section (ERPS) of the Chicago Police Department is the central repository for all property seized, recovered, or found by police officers in Chicago. Located within the Homan Square facility, this section is responsible for the secure storage, tracking, and eventual disposition of evidence and non-evidence items. The facility manages a vast inventory ranging from recovered stolen goods to items held for criminal investigations.
Property Retrieval Process
- Documentation: To retrieve property, owners must present the original Property Inventory Receipt (voucher) and a valid government-issued photo ID.
- Time Limits: Generally, property must be claimed within 30 days of being available for return, or it may be considered abandoned and subject to disposal or auction.
- Appointment: While some walk-ins are processed, contacting the unit in advance to ensure property release authorization is highly recommended to avoid delays.
Specialized Units
The ERPS works in conjunction with the Asset Forfeiture Unit for items subject to seizure laws. Firearms and narcotics are handled with distinct strict protocols and are rarely returned directly to individuals without specific court orders and background checks.
