Judicial Oversight and Discipline
- Mission: authorized to receive, initiate, and investigate complaints concerning active Illinois state court judges.
- Confidentiality: The Constitution mandates that all proceedings remain confidential unless a public complaint is filed with the Courts Commission.
- Jurisdiction: Covers Supreme, Appellate, and Circuit Court judges in the State of Illinois.
The Judicial Inquiry Board (JIB) serves as the independent disciplinary agency for the Illinois judiciary. Citizens who believe a judge has engaged in willful misconduct or is physically/mentally unable to perform their duties can file a complaint here. The Board is not a court of appeal and cannot change a judge’s ruling in a case.
Filing a Complaint
- Process: Complaints must be in writing. Forms are available on the website or by contacting the office.
- Limitations: The Board cannot investigate lawyers, police officers, or federal judges.
