George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building
The George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building, widely known as ’26th and California,’ is the primary facility for felony criminal cases in Cook County. This historic limestone and terra cotta structure serves as the hub for the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court, handling the most serious criminal offenses in Chicago and the surrounding county. The complex is adjacent to the Cook County Department of Corrections, forming one of the largest unified criminal justice sites in the nation.
Court Operations
- Criminal Division: Adjudicates felony cases including murder, sexual assault, robbery, and major drug offenses.
- Bond Court: Conducts daily hearings to set bail conditions for newly arrested individuals (Central Bond Court).
- Jury Services: Hosts a large jury assembly room for citizens summoned for criminal trial service.
Specialized Departments
The building houses the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Criminal Prosecutions Bureau and the main operations of the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender. Additionally, the Adult Probation Department and Forensic Clinical Services have offices onsite to support court mandates and evaluations.
Strict Security Policies
Security at the Leighton Criminal Court Building is extremely strict. Electronic devices, including cell phones, laptops, and tablets, are completely prohibited for the general public. Lockers are available for a fee in the lobby for visitors to store banned items. All entrants must pass through thorough security screening.
