Overview
Portland Public Works Department
The Portland Department of Public Works (DPW) is the backbone of the city’s infrastructure maintenance and essential community services. Headquartered on Canco Road, this agency is responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of Portland’s public spaces and rights-of-way. From keeping the streets clear of snow in the winter to collecting trash and recycling year-round, the DPW plays a vital role in the daily lives of residents.
Core Services and Operations
The department manages a wide array of municipal operations, including:
- Solid Waste Management: Curbside collection of trash and recycling, management of the city’s “purple bag” program, and operation of the Riverside Recycling Facility.
- Streets and Sidewalks: Paving, pothole repair, sidewalk maintenance, and street sweeping to keep thoroughfares passable and safe.
- Winter Operations: Rapid response snow plowing, salting, and removal, as well as the enforcement of emergency parking bans during storms.
- Sewer and Stormwater: Maintenance of the city’s complex drainage and wastewater systems to prevent flooding and protect local water bodies like Casco Bay.
- Traffic Systems: Installation and upkeep of street signs, traffic signals, and pavement markings.
