Overview
Concord Fire Department Prevention Bureau
Mission and Services
The Concord Fire Department Prevention Bureau, often referred to as the Fire Marshal’s Office, is the division dedicated to safeguarding the community through proactive safety measures. Located within the Fire Headquarters complex on Horseshoe Pond Lane, this bureau operates separately from emergency suppression forces, focusing instead on risk reduction, education, and code compliance. The Bureau is staffed by the Fire Marshal, Assistant Fire Marshal, and administrative personnel who work collaboratively with business owners, developers, and residents to prevent fires before they start. Their primary responsibilities include conducting life safety inspections for places of assembly, reviewing plans for new construction and renovation projects to ensure compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, and investigating the causes of fires that occur within the city.
Permits and Inspections
The Prevention Bureau is the central authority for issuing a wide range of necessary permits for safety systems and hazardous activities. Residents and contractors must contact this office to obtain:
- Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Permits: For the installation or modification of suppression and detection systems.
- Burn Permits: Authorization for seasonal outdoor burning (weather permitting).
- Place of Assembly Permits: Required for restaurants, theaters, and event venues to ensure safe occupancy levels.
- Hazardous Operations: Permits for blasting, fireworks displays, and the storage of flammable liquids or LP gas.
- Oil Burner Inspections: Ensuring proper installation of heating appliances.
Public Education and Safety
Beyond enforcement, the Bureau is deeply committed to public outreach. They manage the ”Risk Watch” and ”Learn Not to Burn” programs in local schools, teaching children vital survival skills. The staff also coordinates the Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program to assist families with children showing dangerous curiosity about fire. Community members can reach out to the Bureau for guidance on smoke detector placement, fire escape planning, and general safety inquiries.
Location and Access
The office is situated in Building 3 at 24 Horseshoe Pond Lane, part of the historic renovated Water Works complex that now serves as Fire Headquarters. Visitors should note that this facility handles administrative business and permits; for emergencies, always dial 911. Payment for permits can be made via cash, check, or through the city’s online portal.
