Overview
Gender-Responsive Rehabilitation
Modern Facility and Security
The New Hampshire Correctional Facility for Women (NHCFW), located on Perimeter Road in Concord, is the state’s only prison dedicated solely to female offenders. Opened in 2018 to replace the outdated facility in Goffstown, this modern campus was designed specifically to support a ‘gender-responsive’ approach to corrections. The facility houses approximately 224 residents across various security levels, ranging from minimum (C2) to maximum (C5) custody. The architecture and operational philosophy emphasize rehabilitation, safety, and the specific needs of women, providing a more therapeutic environment than traditional correctional institutions. The site includes housing units, medical services, and spaces for educational and vocational programming.
Programs and Family Connections
NHCFW offers a robust array of programs aimed at reducing recidivism and helping residents transition back into the community. The Education Department provides opportunities to earn high school equivalency (HiSET) and participate in post-secondary courses. Recognizing the vital role of family in rehabilitation, the facility features a dedicated Family Connections Center (FCC), which facilitates meaningful interaction between incarcerated mothers and their children through parenting classes and special visitation events. Vocational training is also a priority, with residents gaining skills in culinary arts, cosmetology, and business education to improve their employability upon release.
Visitation and Strict Policies
Visitation at NHCFW is a privilege subject to strict security regulations to ensure the safety of staff, residents, and the public. All visitors must be pre-approved and are subject to background checks. The facility utilizes both in-person and video visitation systems, with schedules often determined by the resident’s housing unit and security classification. Visitors must adhere to a strict dress code—prohibiting items like revealing clothing, hooded sweatshirts, and metal underwires—and are prohibited from bringing cell phones, cameras, or bags into the secure area. The facility maintains a zero-tolerance policy for contraband, and all visitors pass through security screening before entering.
