Overview
NHSP Transitional Work Center (TWC)
Reentry and Rehabilitation Services
The Transitional Work Center (TWC) is a specialized minimum-security correctional facility operated by the New Hampshire Department of Corrections. Located at 275 North State Street, just south of the main New Hampshire State Prison for Men, the TWC is designed to prepare incarcerated individuals for successful reintegration into society. This facility serves residents who are nearing the end of their sentences and have demonstrated the responsibility required for a lower-security environment.
- Work Release: The center facilitates work release programs where residents are employed in the community during the day, returning to the facility at night. This allows them to build savings, gain employment skills, and pay restitution.
- Educational Training: Residents have access to supervised educational training, including building trades and other vocational skills, to enhance their employability post-release.
- Gradual Reintegration: The TWC acts as a bridge between the highly structured prison environment and complete freedom, offering a controlled setting where residents can adjust to community life under supervision.
- Capacity and Operations: The facility has an operational capacity of approximately 160 minimum-security (C-2) male residents. It operates in conjunction with nearby Transitional Housing Units (THUs) like the North End House.
Facility Access
Access to the Transitional Work Center is strictly controlled. While it is a minimum-security facility, it remains a correctional institution. Visitors must be on an approved list and are subject to search and security screening. The facility is located on the same stretch of North State Street that houses the Shea Farm and the main prison complex, forming a hub of state correctional services.
