Overview
About the Legislative Office Building
The Legislative Office Building (LOB) in Concord, New Hampshire, is a key government facility located directly across North State Street from the historic State House. This granite building houses the committee hearing rooms and offices for the members of the New Hampshire General Court (the state legislature). Originally constructed in 1889 as the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, it was acquired by the state in 1967 and repurposed to serve the legislative branch. It is a hub of political activity during the legislative session, where public hearings on bills are conducted.
Functions and Services
- Committee Hearings: The LOB contains numerous hearing rooms where House and Senate committees meet to discuss proposed legislation and listen to public testimony.
- Legislative Offices: It provides workspace for legislators and legislative staff, facilitating the drafting and review of bills.
- Public Access: The building is generally open to the public to attend hearings, observe the legislative process, and meet with representatives.
Important Visitor Information
Note on Renovations: Please be aware that the Legislative Office Building is subject to major renovation projects (scheduled around 2024-2025) which may temporarily relocate legislative activities and hearings to alternative locations such as One Granite Place. Visitors are strongly advised to check the official General Court calendar for the exact location of specific hearings before traveling.
Security and Parking
Unlike many other state capitols, the New Hampshire State House complex has historically maintained a very open access policy. However, visitors should be prepared to present identification and sign in when attending hearings. Parking in the immediate vicinity is limited to metered street spots; visitors are encouraged to use nearby public parking garages, as the lots directly adjacent to the building are often reserved for legislators.
