Overview
NH Board of Mental Health Practice
The New Hampshire Board of Mental Health Practice is the state regulatory body responsible for the licensure and oversight of mental health professionals. Administrative support for the Board is provided by the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), located at 7 Eagle Square in downtown Concord. The Board’s primary mission is to protect the public by ensuring that all licensed practitioners meet rigorous standards of education, training, and competence.
Regulated Professions
The Board oversees the licensure for a specific group of mental health professionals. Individuals practicing in these fields in New Hampshire must hold a valid license issued by this Board:
- Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC)
- Clinical Social Workers (LICSW) and Social Workers (LSW)
- Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)
- Pastoral Psychotherapists
- School Social Workers
Consumer Protection and Complaints
In addition to issuing licenses, the Board serves a critical role in consumer protection. It investigates complaints filed by the public regarding the professional conduct, ethics, or competence of licensed practitioners. If a violation of state law or the ethical code is found, the Board has the authority to take disciplinary action, which may include fines, license suspension, or revocation. The OPLC provides the administrative machinery for these hearings and investigations.
Licensing Process
Prospective licensees are encouraged to utilize the NH Online Licensing portal for the fastest service. Through this system, applicants can submit their credentials, pay fees, and track the status of their application. Renewals are also handled primarily online. For those needing to visit the office in person, the OPLC at Eagle Square offers a front desk for dropping off documents or making inquiries, though the Board members themselves meet only periodically for scheduled hearings and business meetings.
